The Cardinals also signed veteran outfielder Ray Lankford to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.

St. Louis is looking to revamp its staff, and the 30-year-old Tavarez offers a versatile arm. A reliever last season with Pittsburgh, Tavarez appeared in 64 games and went 3-3 with a 3.66 ERA and 11 saves.

A nine-year veteran, Tavarez has a lifetime record of 63-48 with a 4.52 ERA in 491 games.

Anderson, also 30, spent last season with Tampa Bay, batting .270 with a career-high 67 RBI and 19 stolen bases for the Devil Rays.
