28 die as land mine blows up bus in India

NEW DELHI, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- At least 28 people were killed and several others wounded late Monday when a bus ran over a land mine laid by suspected Maoist rebels in India's southern Andhra Pradesh state.

The bus carrying 45 people struck the land mine near Warangal district. The land mine was planted at a site where police had shot five Maoist rebels on Sunday.

Authorities suspect the People's War Group, which is fighting for agrarian reforms for poor and landless farmers.

The outlawed PWG is an insurgent group that targets landlords and law enforcement officials across large tracts of forest in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Maharashtra.

The PWG accuses rich farm owners of exploiting poor laborers by often denying them minimum wages, grabbing their property and raping women.
