Jones, whose nomination was made Thursday, is no stranger to Europe -- he grew up in France, returning to the United States to earn a degree at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service.

He entered the Marine Corps in 1967 and is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Jones was appointed commandant of the Marine Corps in 1999.
