Egypt asks Bush to seek halt to attack

CAIRO, March 29 (UPI) -- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak called on President Bush Friday to intervene personally to end the Israeli attack on the headquarters of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Mubarak was quoted by Egyptian television as saying he sent a letter to Bush and telephoned Arafat to inform him about the contacts he had made with governments concerning the dangerous situation in the Palestinian territories.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said at a news conference later that the United States had contacted Israel about Arafat's safety but "Israel did not offer a pledge not to try to get Arafat out of the Palestinian territories."

According to Maher, Egypt warned Israel against any further moves against Arafat and that it would hold it responsible for Arafat's safety. Any attempt to take measures against Arafat would have extremely dangerous consequences, Maher said.
