Britain: EU unity over Afghanistan

By CHRIS WHITE

BRUSSELS, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Despite rumors that Britain had become concerned about a weakening EU alliance against Afghanistan, Britain's foreign minister Jack Straw said Monday that EU unity remained "as solid as ever."

Saying that he could well understand the impatience of the media and the public, he declared that the battle "against these appalling acts of terrorism would be a long one."

He said that EU ministers were "veterans of Kosovo who understood what had been necessary to release the poor Muslims from the fascist dictator now on trial at The Hague."

According to the British minister, most of the debate on the war against terrorism that took place at the EU foreign ministers meeting Monday in Luxembourg focused on peace in the Middle East and the need for wider stability.
