FARNBOROUGH, England, July 12 (UPI) -- Safran has been selected to supply helicopter engines for the U.K. Ministry of Defense's Flying Training Systems program, the company announced Monday.

The company will provide Arrius 2B2Plus and Arriel 2E turbines for the training program's fleet of Airbus H135 and H145 helicopters, the company said in a statement.

Safran has provided engines for the U.K. training program's Gazelle and Squirrel rotary aircraft for 40 years.

Arrius and Arriel engines are used in training operations in the United States, Australia, France and Germany, among other countries, the company said.

The Arrius' performance in hot-and-high conditions enables the H135 to carry more payload at the same altitude.

It was announced in May that Airbus Helicopters U.K. would provide a mixed fleet of H135 and H145 aircraft for the training of military pilots and crew.

The contract issued is worth about $730 million over 17 years and includes provision of service solutions.
