Saudis modify contract for Abrams tanks

General Dynamics Land Systems has received a contract modification for continued production work for Saudi Arabia's fleet of Abrams tanks.

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich., Dec. 24 (UPI) -- A follow-up contract for continued procurement and production of Abrams tanks for Saudi Arabia has been received by General Dynamics Land Systems.

The award is a modification of a 2008 Foreign Military Sales contract to upgrade the country's fleet of M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams to the M1A2S configuration and is worth $99.7 million.

The M1A2S features enhanced efficiency and capability and includes upgraded armor components and an enhanced cooling system.

The company said the work will be conducted by its Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in Lima, Ohio. Work under the modification is expected to be completed in July 2016.

Saudi Arabia is in the process of upgrading its entire fleet of more than 300 Abrams tanks and purchasing more of the vehicles from the United States under the Foreign Military Sales program.

Additional details of the new contract modification were not provided by the company.
