OTTAWA, April 15 (UPI) -- Adjunct processing systems for use with AN/SQS-510 sonar are being provided to the Portuguese Navy by General Dynamics Canada.

The Eclipse processing system will work in parallel with the AN/SQS-510, improving the sonar’s capability to detect and characterize echoes and sounds transmitted through the water to determine the location and physical characteristics of threats such as submarines and torpedoes.

It also provides an enhanced display of sonar information, on high-resolution flat panel monitors.

"General Dynamics Canada has a 40-year history of providing and supporting underwater systems and components to navies around the world,” said David Ibbetson, vice president, General Dynamics C4 Systems International, of which General Dynamics Canada is a part. “As the original designer and manufacturer of the AN/SQS-510 hull-mounted sonar system, we are pleased to bring new capabilities to this valuable and trusted system."

The AN/SQS-510 is a medium-frequency, hull-mounted sonar in service with the Canadian, Portuguese and Bulgarian navies. The Eclipse system will be integrated aboard three Portuguese Vasco da Gama-class frigates.
