EDGEWOOD, Md., April 9 (UPI) -- Smiths Detection of Maryland reports it has received its first order for the company’s new large tunnel explosives detection system for checked luggage.
The order for the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT explosives detection system was made by the Santiago International Airport in Chile through Smiths Detection’s regional partner, Aerotech.
“HI-SCAN 10080 XCT provides an ideal solution for major airports looking to enhance baggage security,” said Brian Jones, Smiths Detection interim president. “It is faster, takes up less space and its dual imaging expedites throughput.
“We are delighted Santiago Airport will be the first to reap the benefits.”
The XCT features an imaging solution based on the company’s dual-energy, dual-view X-ray technology and Computed Tomography (CT) from Analogic Corporation. It has a large tunnel opening and a conveyor belt speed of 98 feet a minute. Smiths Detection said as many as 1,800 bags can be screened in an hour by the machine.
XCT has gained European Union standard 3 approval and lab certification from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration allowing it to be marketed outside the United States.
