DALLAS, March 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has contracted Lockheed Martin for Lot 9 production of the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System unitary rockets.
GMLRS is a fast deployment, all-weather rocket for precision strike beyond the reach of most conventional weapons.
In combat operations, each GMLRS rocket is packaged in an MLRS launch pod and is fired from the Lockheed Martin HIMARS or M270 family of launchers, the company said in an announcement this week.
Lot 9 production will be for the Army, U.S. Marine Corps and for Italy. Rocket deliveries under the $255 million contract will begin in April 2015.
Lockheed said production will take place at its facility in Camden, Ark.
In other company news, Lockheed has been given a $24 million indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award for training and the transfer of technology to Iraq for maintenance of C-130J aircraft.
The U.S. Department of Defense said the award was issued by the 338 Security Contracting Squadron, Joint Base San Antonio, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.
The work, part of a Foreign Military Sales agreement between the United States and Iraq, will be performed at New Al-Muthana Air Base -- the Baghdad International Airport Complex – and will be completed by Jan. 31, 2017.
