Smiths Detection receives U.S. government order

DANBURY, Conn., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection has contracted Smiths Detection to supply it with miniaturized chemical identification systems.

The systems for use at border crossings and points of entry into the United States will provide fast and comprehensive in-field analysis of suspicious unknown substances.

"Smiths Detection combines cutting-edge technology in an easy-to-handle package for use in the field and in challenging environments," said Bob Bohn, vice president of U.S. sales for Smiths. "Our technology allows government agencies like the Customs and Border Protection to make fast decisions helping to reduce exposure, time and costs when dealing with a suspected threat or illegal substances."

The value of the contract and details on the systems to be supplied were not detailed by the company. It noted, however, that its newest product introductions have included HazMatID Elite -- a Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrometer that identifies material based on its light absorption -- and ACE-ID, a Raman chemical identifier that uses a laser to identify solids and liquids through certain plastics and glass.
