HENGELO, Netherlands, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Thales Nederlands' Scout Mk3 naval surveillance radar is to be installed on a new Dutch Navy joint support ship now under construction.

The contract for the unit was issued by shipbuilder Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, which is constructing the vessel for the Netherlands' Defense Materiel Organization.

"The Thales Scout Mk3 naval surveillance radar was selected because of its unique low-probability-of-intercept feature," Thales said. "The radar is a new product in the vast range of Thales naval sensors and this contract constitutes its market introduction.

"The first sea trials of the new joint support ship with Scout Mk3 installed are scheduled for May 2014."

Scout Mk3 is a 2D maritime surveillance radar with advanced Doppler processing. It is capable of detecting small objects even in high seas or in close vicinity to larger objects. Other features include automatic detection and tracking, and helicopter and UAV approach and guidance.
