Netherlands, Sweden order boats from Damen Shipyards

GORINCHEM, Netherlands, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Damen Shipyards Group of the Netherlands is to build five tug boats for the navies of the Netherlands and Sweden.

The harbor and seagoing boats, for delivery next year and in 2016, were ordered under a contract from The Dutch Defense Material Organization of the Royal Netherlands Navy in cooperation with its Swedish counterpart, Forsvarets Materielverk.

Damen Shipyards said three of the vessels will be for the Netherlands' Navy. They will be the new ASD Tug 2810 Hybrid, which meets the country's current and future emissions goals. The tug boats are to replace Linge-class tug boats now in service.

The vessels for Sweden will be commercial off-the-shelf ASD Tug 3010s for use in icy conditions.

Boats for both navies will be customized to meet specific customer requirements, Damen Shipyards said.

Damen Shipyards Group, which operates 40 ship and repair yards, did not disclose the value of the award or other contractual details.
