COLUMBUS, Ga., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- A new 105,000-square-foot overhaul facility for F100 engines used on F-16 and F-15 jet aircraft has been opened in Georgia by Pratt & Whitney.
Work on the facility by Pratt & Whitney, the Development Authority of Columbus and Western Devcon Inc., began last July and first engine overhauls are expected to begin early next year, the company said.
"To remain competitive and realize efficiencies, it made sense to take advantage of the engine services infrastructure we already have here in Columbus," said Tom Bode, Columbus Engine Center general manager. "This expansion is a strategic investment for our company and will be critical to our success in the future by allowing us to centralize much of our commercial and military engine aftermarket, repair and overhaul work."
The majority of overhaul work on the F100 engine was previously performed at Pratt & Whitney's facility in San Antonio, Texas. Much of that work will now be performed at the Columbus, Ga., plant.
The plant in Columbus already performs work on PW2000 engines and the F117 engine, which is used on the U.S. military's C-17 Globemaster II airlifter
