Unmanned sonar system demonstrated for Navy

ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Advanced Acoustic Concepts says its unmanned, high-resolution synthetic aperture sonar system performed successfully in a U.S. Navy demonstration event.

The event was the 2013 Fleet Experimentation, or FLEX, Unmanned System Campaign demonstration, during which manufacturers demonstrated mature mine warfare systems.

DRS, which owns the joint venture company with Thales, said the T-SAS system developed with Thales provided fleet operators with improved probability of correct classification of mines, reduced incidents of false alarms, increased area clearance rates and reduce the overall mine warfare detect-to-engage timeline.

"The FLEX demonstration offered the opportunity to operate in a high-clutter tactical mine warfare environment," the company said. "Over three days, 1,100 contacts were processed in real-time with a final tally of 44 MILCOs (Mine-Like Contacts) and very low false alarm rates.

"T-SAS, a mature and highly reliable system, was operational throughout the entire demonstration with more than 60 hours of in-water operations."

The T-SAS is an upgraded version of Thales' TSM 2054 Side Scan Sonar, and is in service with the French Navy.
