BALTIMORE, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has given Northrop Grumman Cobham Intercoms LLC its first production delivery order for AN/VIC-5 enhanced vehicular communication systems.
The AN/VIC-5, an integrated intercom system, provides internet protocol communications and is the successor to the AN/VIC-3 used in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is comprised of a range of control consoles, operator stations, cables and headsets, and can be mixed and matched to fit various platform requirements.
The system delivers clear, noise-free communications between crew members inside and outside the combat vehicle to dismounted users and combat net radios.
"AN/VIC-5 is the most advanced vehicular inter-communications system available to meet the demanding environment encountered by our soldiers," said Kay Burch, co-chair of the NGCI board of directors and vice president of Northrop Grumman's communications, intelligence and networking solutions business unit. "We look forward to working with the Army to begin fielding this solution that defines a new standard for vehicular intercom systems."
NGCI was given a $2.4 billion indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract in 2009 by the Army to supply the system. The production delivery order marks the official start its production and deployment phase following testing earlier this year.
NGCI is a joint venture of Northrop Grumman and Britain-headquartered Cobham Plc.
