SSL continues work on next-gen military satellites

PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- A contract option for continued development and demonstration of design concepts for military satellite communications has been given to Space Systems/Loral.

The option was exercised by the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center. Its monetary value and time period, however, were not disclosed.

"Our extensive history in developing satellite communications systems positions SSL well to take a fresh look at affordable ways to provide advanced communications capability to the warfighter," said Eric Spittle, president of SSL Federal. "The award of this contract option is an excellent endorsement of our success in the first phase of the concept exploration process."

SSL, a commercial satellite manufacturer, said it will leverage its expertise in mobile communications, broadband and high- definition video broadcasting for the Air Force's future Protected MILSATCOM efforts for next-generation SATCOM connectivity for platforms such as remotely piloted aircraft and ground command-and-control vehicles.
