WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- The governments of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are seeking U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile systems.
The deals, if approved by Congress, would be worth a total of more than $7.6 billion.
THAAD is a U.S. Army kinetic system for destroying short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles in the terminal flight phase.
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, in its notification to Congress of the possible Foreign Military Sales deals, said acquisition of the systems by the two countries would enable them to counter current and future threats in the Persian Gulf region.
Qatar is seeking two THAAD fire units, 12 THAAD launchers, 150 THAAD interceptors, two THAAD fire control and communications systems, two AN/TPY-2 THAAD radars, and one early warning radar.
Fire unit maintenance equipment, trucks, generators, electrical power units, trailers, communications equipment, tools, test and maintenance equipment, repair and return, system integration and checkout, spare/repair parts would also be included in the $6.5 billion package.
The United Arab Emirates aims to procure 48 THAAD missiles; nine THAAD launchers; test components; repair and return; support equipment; spare and repair parts; and personnel training.
The value of the Emirates' deal is about $1.35 billion.
The principal contractors would be Lockheed Martin Space Systems Corp. Raytheon would be the deals' subcontractor.
