ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- MEADS International reports it has integrated the first multifunction fire control system for its missile defense system.
The Medium Extended Air Defense System Multifunction Fire Control Radar was integrated with the systems battle manager and launcher at an Italian air force base and demonstrated its capabilities, including 360-degree target acquisition and tracking.
"The MEADS MFCR combines extraordinary capability and cost effectiveness," said MEADS International President Dave Berganini. "It can detect and track advanced threats with 360-degree coverage and no blind spots.
"Unlike fielded radars, it is highly mobile and C-130 transportable."
The MFCR is an X-band, solid-state phased array radar. MEADS said that in rapid system deployments, it provides both surveillance and fire control capabilities until a surveillance radar joins the network.
The MFCR uses its main beam for uplink and downlink missile communications.
The Medium Extended Air Defense System is a multinational project by the United States, Germany and Italy to develop a counter-missile system to replace the Patriot. Lockheed Martin is a member of the joint venture working on the system.
"Integration of the MFCR, Battle Manager and Launcher is proving that all elements are capable of tracking live targets and engaging them virtually," said MEADS International Technical Director Marco Riccetti. "We are on track for a successful intercept flight test at White Sands Missile Range later this year."
