BREMEN, Germany, May 17 (UPI) -- A heavy-weight torpedo from Germany's Atlas Elektronik has achieved what the company called a record operational range.

The company's SeaHake mod4 ER achieved a range of more than 86 miles in a recent test firing, it said.

"With this record, Atlas Elektronik has set a new benchmark in torpedo technology," Atlas Elektronik Executive Director of Naval Weapons Kai Pelzer said. "Until now, such ranges were hardly even conceivable.

"We are very proud to have made such a significant advance in torpedo technology, thus giving our customers new possibilities for sea defense."

Atlas Elektronik said the SeaHake mod 4 is an advancement of its DM 2 A4 torpedo in service with Germany, Turkey, Pakistan and Spain. Its range was extended by "fully exploiting the system's unique propulsion and battery technology," it said.

The SeaHake mod4 also features enhanced navigation and communications technology for precise navigation and control.

The sea test of the new torpedo was carried out in collaboration with Germany's Armed Forces Technical Center for Ships and Naval Weapons.
