German decoy system for South Korean navy

DUSSELDORF, Germany, April 30 (UPI) -- South Korea plans to equip its new landing ship tank vessels with a decoy system from Rheinmetall of Germany.

The company's fully computerized Multi-ammunition Softkill System will be installed in two of four LSTs as part of a pilot project.

The MASS uses sensor-guided rounds with decoys to lure incoming missiles from intended targets. It has proven its capability in international testing, Rheinmetall said, and can be integrated into any command-and-control system or operated in stand-alone mode.

Rheinmetall introduced the system in 2002 and has since booked orders for MASS from the navies of 11 countries.

Rheinmetall said the systems will be provided to South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration through Samsung-Thales, which has a licensing agreement with Rheinmetall.

The value of the contract is more than $9.2 million.
