Japan receiving U.S. sonar buoys

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., April 10 (UPI) -- Active and passive sonar buoys for Japan's maritime force are to be provided by ERAPSCO/SonobuoyTech Systems of the United States.

The systems, which will be provided through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program, is worth $2.6 million and will be used in support of the Japan military exercises planned with the U.S. Navy and others.

ERAPSCO/SonobuoyTech Systems is a joint venture of Sparton Corp. and USSI, a subsidiary of Ultra Electronics Holdings Plc., and received the subcontracts for the buoys from Sparton.

"ERAPSCO/SonobuoyTech Systems is pleased to have been selected to assist Japan's efforts in protecting its borders by providing the leading-edge products developed by our joint venture partners," said Cary Wood, president and chief executive officer of Sparton.

"Passive and active sonobuoys are used for detection, classification and localization of adversary submarines during peacetime and combat operations.

"We welcome opportunities to play a role in the defense activities of our foreign allies and the increase in the number of contracts we've received from foreign nations demonstrates ERAPSCO's deliberate progress into markets outside the U.S."
