Echotec advances sonar technology

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 5 (UPI) -- Echotec Sonar of Canada has improved the image resolution levels of its sonar equipment and added 3-D capability high bandwidth technology.

Northstar Electronics Inc., which has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire Echotec Sonar, announced that by using high bandwidth technology in a new and innovative way, Echotec high-definition sonar images are of a crisper quality than those produced by normal sonar and is suitable for military as well as commercial use.

The Echotec Sonar technique applies a new computer-aided detection and classification algorithm, it said, improving resolution and probability of detection and classification.

"These new techniques in processing underwater signals set us apart and have allowed us to package the performance usually attributed to much larger systems into a small low cost package which we believe will be affordable to all maritime users," said Phillip Johnson, chief executive officer of Echotec Sonar.

"We plan on launching this uniquely featured, new commercial system later this year."
