SAN DIEGO, March 8 (UPI) -- A training simulator for Lynx multi-mode radar has been introduced by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. of California.
The Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Simulator, a software-based capability, can be run on a laptop computer.
"TARS bridges the gap between classroom training and cost-prohibitive aircraft flight training, combining Lynx command and control simulations with synthetic electro-optic/infrared video simultaneously," said Linden Blue, president, Reconnaissance Systems Group, GA-ASI.
"This cost-effective training software also uses satellite imagery and 3-D models to generate synthetic aperture radar-like products in real-time, alleviating the need for costly operational imagery."
GA-ASI said that with TARS instructors can conduct simulated SAR/Ground Moving Target Indicator exercises with realistic combat scenarios. Instructors can also build their own scenarios.
The system allows for automatic cross-cueing capability between the Lynx radar system and the full-motion video camera system.
The Lynx Multi-mode Radar, which incorporates a broad area GMTI scanning capability, is operational with the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Army, the British air force, Italian air force and the Iraqi air force.
