ROANOKE, Va., Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Thousands of image intensifier tubes for AN/PVS-14 night-vision goggles have been ordered from ITT Exelis by the U.S. Army.

The order -- for 8,248 Gen 3 (I2) MX-11769 tubes -- is the largest the company has received under the Army OMNI VIII program and is worth $11 million.

"ITT Exelis is extremely excited about this award," said Nick Bobay, vice president and general manager, Night Vision and Vision Systems, ITT Exelis Geospatial Systems. "It is a culmination of the excellent work the team has done developing the next generation of I2 tube production, which dramatically reduces costs.

"Exelis looks forward to future worldwide opportunities to provide our industry-leading tubes at very competitive prices."

The Gen 3 image intensified night vision technology provides a soldier with superior visibility and enables mobility in low-light conditions.

ITT Exelis didn't announce a delivery schedule for the image intensifier tubes.
