BAE, AVX join forces in Navy contract bid

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- BAE Systems and AVX Aircraft Company have joined forces to gain the U.S. Navy contract for the Medium Range Maritime Unmanned Aerial System.

The MRMUAS will give the Navy a multi-intelligence, reconfigurable platform for operation from all air-capable ships and the teaming will bring combined expertise in system and subsystem integration and rotorcraft design to the project.

BAE said the team recently submitted a proposal to develop the sea- and land-based vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial system. Its solution integrates AVX's new aircraft configuration with BAE's onboard common autonomous mission systems, payloads, mission control system and support capabilities.

The solution, which leverages state-of-the-art subsystems, a modular open system architecture and a common mission system design, exceeds MRMUAS mission requirements, BAE said.

Additional details of the solution weren't disclosed but BAE said the team had concluded that UAS systems on the market would be unable to meet Navy requirements.
