Army orders PackBot robots

BEDFORD, Mass., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The U.S. Army has awarded iRobot Corp. a five-year, $60 million contract for PackBot robots, spare parts, repairs, upgrades and support services.

The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award was given by the Army's Robotic Systems Joint Program Office.

Under the contract's terms, provision of the robots and services isn't only for the U.S. military but also for allies through the Foreign Military Sales program.

"IRobot's sales to international customers, directly and through FMS contracts, continue to grow," said Robert Moses, president of iRobots Government and Industrial Robots Division. "We see great potential for continued growth as existing customers use robots in a wider variety of missions and potential customers become aware of their life-saving benefits.

"IRobot is pleased to have this contract vehicle in place, which will allow the Army to purchase additional robots and deliver them to our soldiers, allies and coalition partners across the globe."

The company has delivered more than 4,000 robots to warfighters and first responders worldwide to perform bomb disposal, reconnaissance and other missions.
