Asian countries order observation systems

HAIFA, Israel, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Israel's defense electronics company Elbit Systems Ltd. has received $20 million in orders from Asian countries for observation systems.

The systems ordered are for use on maritime patrol aircraft, vessels and observation towers.

The identities of the countries weren't disclosed.

Under the contracts, Elbit's Elop Ltd. business unit will deliver various payloads from the CoMPASS family of systems, including Micro CoMPASS, an extremely lightweight electro-optical system already in use by world leading armies, as well as the DCoMPASS, a highly advanced system that provides users with exceptionally high resolution digital imagery for both day and night.

DCoMPASS is installed on patrol aircraft, unmanned aircraft systems, coast guard vessels and frigates for long-range observation, aiming and target designation and tracking.

Elbit said the contracts follow an award earlier this year to Elbit Systems from an Asian country for dozens of CoMPASS payloads for maritime patrol aircraft.

"We have witnessed a growth in demand for maritime observation systems, a direct result of the rise in maritime terror throughout the world and the need to protect coastal shores," said Elop General Manager Adi Dar. "This demand has resulted in new orders from both existing and new customers, including orders for systems for new platforms.

"We expect that this success will be followed by additional orders, further strengthening Elop's position as a world leading observation systems supplier for air, ground and naval applications."

The systems will be delivered over three years, the company said.
