LONDON, Ontario, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada is supplying 33 light-armored vehicles in various configurations to the U.S. Marine Corps.
The contract was awarded through the Canadian Commercial Corp., an agency of the Canadian government, and is worth $30.8 million.
The LAV-A2 is a mobile system for conducting offensive and defensive operations in support of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force. The eight-wheeled amphibious vehicle is equipped with enhanced armor protection and an automatic fire-suppression system.
General Dynamics said production of the vehicles will take place at the company's operations in London, Ontario.
Manufacturing is to be completed by December 2012, the company said.
No information on a delivery schedule was disclosed.
The Marine Corps have ordered 240 LAV-A2 vehicles since 2007. Nearly 800 units of an earlier version of the light-armored vehicle entered service with the Marines in the 1980s and continue operational through current deployments.
