The goal of the National Ignition Facility is to create nuclear fusion and energy gain for the first time in a lab. Achieving this milestone would allow scientists to help ensure the country's safety without nuclear weapons testing, define energy for the future by utilizing fusion power plants and gain a better understanding of the universe.

"CDI-Aerospace has supported the NIF's developmental phase of ignition experiments and we look forward to supporting the NIF into the future as it performs tests crucial to achieving this self-sustaining nuclear fusion and energy gain," said Denny Vito, executive vice president and general manager of CDI-Aerospace.

CDI-Aerospace's Phoenix Design Center will serve as the program center, the company said.
