Marines order Elbit laser designators

MERRIMACK, N.H., March 28 (UPI) -- The U.S. subsidiary of Israel's Elbit Systems is providing the U.S. Marine Corps with laser target designators under a $9.6 million contract.

The one-year award to Elbit Systems of America is for three first article units of the Joint Terminal Attack Controller Laser Target Designator units, 150 production units, spares and training.

If the Marine Corps System Command exercises options for logistics support the total contract value will be $10.8 million.

The JTAC LTD is a light-weight, battery-powered unit for guiding bombs and missiles to targets during day or night operations. It incorporates the company's Rattler designator, which is currently in full-scale production and implemented on numerous airborne and ground programs.

Elbit Systems of America said the Marine Corps JTAC LTD is meant to supplement full-power, long-range laser target designators.

"Elbit Systems of America is pleased to provide the Marines with this tactical capability, based on significant investment in advanced miniaturized laser technologies and a deep understanding of the operational requirements …," said Raanan Horowitz, Elbit Systems of America's president and chief executive officer. "This award is evidence of our proven ability to put life-saving, precision instruments in the hands of those on the frontlines."
