European, Indian firms in defense venture

PARIS, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Europe's Cassidian, a member of the EADS Group, and India's Larsen and Toubro are forming a joint venture company for defense electronics.

The joint venture, which will have headquarters in Bangalore, will be focused on manufacturing, designing, engineering, distributing and marketing in the fields of electronic warfare, radars, avionics and mobile systems for military applications.

Larsen and Toubro will hold 74 percent in the joint venture, which will cooperate closely with Cassidian's new engineering center in Bangalore.

"In addition to its other businesses, L&T has been a leading company in India for engineering, manufacture and integration of custom made, technology-intensive equipment and systems," said M. V. Kotwal, president L&T's Heavy Engineering division said. "The coming together of L&T with Cassidian … is a major milestone in the area of defense electronics. It will not only serve the Indian armed forces with state-of-the art technology but also provide a platform for making significant contributions to the global market in high-technology defense equipment."
