Canada orders radars from Thales

OTTAWA, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Canada's Department of National Defense has contracted Thales Canada for two Ground Master 400 deployable, tactical radar systems, the company reported.

The radar systems will be integrated with a suite of communications and operator control systems already in use.

"We are pleased to deliver on the government of Canada's challenging requirements with our Ground Master radar that provides accurate detection against a vast array of modern-day threats while maintaining a high level of mobility," said Paul Kahn, Thales Canada president and chief executive officer. "This builds on our 40-year track record of providing world-class sensor systems to the Canadian forces as highlighted by our recent award ... for SMART-S radars for the Canadian navy's Halifax class frigates."

Thales said the GM 400 is a three-dimensional, long-range air defense radar that offers detection from very high to very low altitudes. It tracks a wide range of targets from highly maneuverable low-flying tactical aircraft to unconventional smaller targets such as unmanned aerial vehicles.

Reinforcing Thales capabilities as a prime contractor and a premier system integrator in Canada, the radar will be integrated with an Identification Friend or Foe, command-and-control, Ground-Air-Ground and SatCom Communications, Link 16/11/1, networking and management systems, and simulation.
