Australia orders vehicle surveillance gear

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- The surveillance variant of the Australian military's light armored vehicles is being equipped with DRS Technologies' Multi-Spectral Surveillance Suite.

The $30 million contract from the Australian Department of Defense includes production of the systems, a systems integration laboratory, spares and associated logistics support.

The contract, which runs through March 2013, follows earlier contracts for MSSS system development, the company said.

The Armored Fighting Vehicle Systems Program Office in Melbourne is the contracting entity within the Australian Defense Materiel Organization.

The MSSS is a suite of electro-optical sensors integrated with ground surveillance radar and is used for mounted and dismounted reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition operations. The ASLAV-S MSSS provides a day/night surveillance and targeting capability through a tightly integrated combination of stabilized infrared and color day cameras and a laser rangefinder package.

The system is coupled with the Australian version of DRS's Manportable Surveillance and Target Acquisition Radar on a 29.5-foot telescoping mast.
