BAE supplies Army with more thermal sights

LEXINGTON, Mass., Dec. 6 (UPI) -- More U.S. Army remote-controlled, vehicle-mounted weapons are being outfitted by thermal imaging sights from BAE Systems.

BAE's TIM 1500 units will extend the viewing range of soldiers operating the light- and medium-caliber systems from within their vehicles and enhance the range for target acquisition as well as surveillance.

The multiple contracts are worth $38 million the company said. Additional award details weren't disclosed by the company.

"The TIM1500 provides high-performance imaging while offering a smaller, lighter, lower power and lower life-cycle cost compared with other competitive options," said Michael Mawn, productline manager for TIM1500. "Our world-class technology demonstrates how we understand the warfighter,and their needs for successful missions."

BAE said its facility in Lexington, Mass., will ship the TIM 1500 units to Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace AS.

BAE said it recently shipped its 10,000th TIM 1500 imager and increased production of the units to support U.S. Army needs.
