Danes draw helo shortlist

HELSINKI, Finland, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Denmark's Defense Acquisition and Logistics Organization has short-listed six candidates for its navy's Maritime Helicopter Replacement Program.

DefenseNews said the five NATO-compatible helicopters are the AgustaWestland AW101, AgustaWestland Lynx Wildcat, NH Industries NH90, Sikorsky H-92 and the U.S. Navy's Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk.

DALO officials have said they prefer helicopters that are already in use or approaching production.

The U.S. Navy's Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk is viewed as having a marginally lower project risk than its rivals and carries a competitive price, the report said. The NH90 and the Sikorsky H-92 are highly rated in DALO's evaluations but neither aircraft have been operationally deployed.

DefenseNews said AgustaWestland's AW101 also is highly rated as a possible replacement for the service's aging Lynx but there are concerns it may be too large for some of the country's ships.

The six helicopters are undergoing technical and operational evaluations but a final decision by DALO on the type selection and procurement process is months away.
