Sweden selects Saab for Gripen service

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 1 (UPI) -- Saab has received a contract to provide ongoing life-cycle maintenance and modernization services on the Swedish air force's fleet of Gripen fighter aircraft.

The Gripen was developed and is manufactured by defense company Saab. The multi-role fighter aircraft operates using a single engine and is deployed by Swedish, Czech, Hungarian and South African air forces.

Sweden's Saab received the task order from the Swedish Defense Material Administration.

The contract is for maintenance, technical support and services including "basic operations such as test flying, rigs and simulators in order to ensure the Gripen system's operational ability and airworthiness," a release said.

Saab announced it will provide the Gripen support work at its Stockholm facility along with three of the company's other aircraft service installations.

The contract is worth approximately $29.14 million.
