NG official calls for more cyber research

OMAHA, June 1 (UPI) -- A top official at Northrop Grumman says more research and collaboration should take place on issues of cybersecurity to address U.S. Defense Department needs.

Northrop Grumman Information Systems Sector Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Robert Brammer called on the defense market to increase levels of research to develop technologies to counter the escalating threats to mission critical defense networks from cyberterrorists.

"Substantial work by the government, industry and academia is needed to realize the potential of these technologies for large-scale implementations that will have national impact," Brammer said.

Brammer spoke at the recent two-day Annual Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association STRATCOM Cyberspace Symposium in Nebraska.

The panel included officials from Northrop Grumman's Cybersecurity Research Consortium, which was formed in 2009 to develop cybersecurity technologies.

Brammer additionally suggested there are promising emerging technologies that the Cybersecurity Research Consortium is addressing but that increased collaboration is needed.
