PORT HUENEME, Calif., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy announced plans to unveil its first littoral combat ship mission package support facility at Naval Base Ventura County on Friday.
The U.S. Navy described the littoral combat ship as a revolutionary warship designed for anti-submarine, surface and mine warfare operations.
The 42,400 square-foot mission package support facility will serve as an initial mission package employed with littoral combat ships.
E. Anne Sandel, executive program officer for littoral and mine warfare, described the facility as a "great first step" in supporting the lifecycle of Navy surface combat.
"As the Navy moves towards multipurpose ships with modular design, it only makes sense that our maintenance and support activities adapt," Sandel said.
The mission package support facility serves to support the littoral combat ship fleet by providing a central hub for storage and maintenance, providing round-the-clock services.
The program supports littoral combat ships ported in San Diego.
