Washington Chambers keel laid by NASSCO

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The keel of the U.S. Navy's 11th Lewis and Clark class of dry cargo-ammunition ships has been laid by General Dynamics in San Diego.

U.S. company General Dynamics says its National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. subsidiary announced its production process for the Washington Chambers (T-AKE) vessel has advanced following the laying of the keel.

NASSCO, who began construction on the Washington Chambers in March, laid the ship's keel for what is the Navy's 11th Lewis and Clark class of dry cargo-ammunition ship.

Officials say the Washington Chambers is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy early in 2011. According to a news release NASSCO "has delivered seven T-AKE ships to the Navy and is under contract to build five additional T-AKE ships, including the Washington Chambers."
