French debt surpasses EU cap

PARIS, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- France's public debt is more than $236 billion -- surpassing an EU cap -- according to a report Tuesday.

The country's center-right Le Figaro newspaper first reported that French debt amounts to $1,298 billion, or 66 percent of its gross domestic product.

Added to this is another $1062 billion earmarked for civil servant retirees.

Together, the two figures amount to 120 percent of the country's GDP, Le Figaro reported.

The figure is twice the cap set by the European Commission, which stipulates that public debts by EU member nations cannot surpass 60 percent of their GDP.

The newspaper's estimates are reportedly based on a report by a fact-finding commission appointed by French Finance Minister Thierry Breton.

The report is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
