Lagos state government to build new power plants

ABUJA, Nigeria, July 5 (UPI) -- The Lagos state government intends to build four new independent power plants with a combined electrical generating capacity of 226 megawatts.

Lagos state is where more than 60 percent of Nigeria's industries are based, and power demand has been exceeding electrical generation capabilities for years. Lagos state also has seaports, an international airport, head offices of banks and insurance companies, and a population estimated at more than 15 million, making it Nigeria's economic and financial hub.

Lagos Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Olusola Oworu said the state government intends the new IPPs would assist the operation of industries in selected industrial clusters in the state, Business Day newspaper reported Wednesday.

Lagos state currently consumes more than 40 percent of Nigeria's overall national electrical output and is estimated to require more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity to function efficiently.

Lagos state had previously constructed the 12.15 megawatt Akute/Adiyan IPP in partnership with Oando PLC and the 270 megawatt Lagos Island IPP in a joint project with AES.
