Jordan, Qatar review LNG options

AMMAN, Jordan, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Jordan and Qatar formed a technical team to discuss sourcing of natural gas from the Persian Gulf country to offset Egyptian issues, a minister said.

The Jordanian government is said to be examining the possibility of getting natural gas from gulf states or tap into liquefied natural gas from its neighbors to compensate for supply disruptions from Egypt, one of Jordan's top energy suppliers.

Militants in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula last year targeted natural gas pipelines supplying consumers in Israel and Jordan nearly a dozen times.

Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Qutaybeh Abu Qurah told Jordan's news agency Petra that a task force with Qatar was formed to discuss possibilities for liquefied natural gas and associated infrastructure.

Both sides, he said, agreed to have a formal review of the technical team's discussions within two months.

Jordan meets more than 80 percent of its energy demand through imports. Amman had said it was keen on securing more resources from Iraq and Qatar, though last year said those developments could be at least two years away.
