TOKYO, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A "green" conference in Japan will highlight energy problems facing developing countries and showcase the country's own green sector, the United Nations said.
Kandeh Yumkella, director general of the U.N. Industrial Development Organization, ended a three-day trip to Japan by announcing a green industry conference scheduled for November in Tokyo.
Yumkella said the conference represented the close ties between Japan and UNIDO.
"The Tokyo Green Industry Conference will help Japan, a key supporter of UNIDO, focus on resolving the energy and environment-related problems that developing and emerging economies are facing," he said.
The conference would give Japan the opportunity to showcase its "well-known" green industrial base, Yumkella said.
"Green industry is about making sure all enterprises work to minimize their consumption of natural resources, including energy, while also reducing emissions and waste," he said.
Japan was forced to take another look at its energy mix after a 9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami crippled the country's nuclear energy sector in March. Japan's prime minister resigned Friday in part because of public frustration with his handling of the nuclear crisis.
Japan's government helps coordinate the green conference.
