UNIDO backs Peruvian grid plans

VIENNA, June 17 (UPI) -- The U.N. Industrial Development Organization said it was backing Peru's efforts to bring electricity to the estimated 3 million people living in rural areas.

Peru said that by July it aims to expand electricity deliveries to more than 11,000 villages and the estimated 3 million people living there.

"In that sense, UNIDO is ready to cooperate with Peru in developing future projects related to the field of energy and green energy," the organization said in a statement.

Peru established a five-year plan dubbed the National Rural Electrification Plan -- Light for All, which aims to extend electricity coverage with projects in marginal and rural areas, UNIDO noted.

More than 1,200 rural electrification projects worth an estimated $616 million were carried in Peru out since 2006.

The highlights of the rural electrification project were discussed between UNIDO Director General Kandeh Yumkella and Garcia Revilla, the ambassador of Peru to Austria and to International Organizations in Vienna.
