LOS ANGELES, June 28 (UPI) -- Microsoft has agreed to pay a California woman $10,000 after its Windows 10 installation wrecked her computer.

Teri Goldstein, who runs a travel agency, sued the software giant after Windows 10 automatically installed itself on her work computer, rendering it unusable.

She claimed the software installed itself without her permission and caused her lost wages and a PC. Goldstein won the case, but after a brief attempt to appeal the ruling, Microsoft decided it was better to just pay the woman the $10,000.

Microsoft has been pushing its new operating system, free for computers already running Windows 7 and 8. It was bundled with security updates in February and would install itself automatically unless the user blocked it.

Many consumers don't want it for various reasons, including they are running old hardware, have software that wouldn't work on Windows 10, or object to the software's tracking features.
