WASHINGTON, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Orlando's main theme parks, Walt Disney World, SeaWorld and Universal Orlando, installed metal detectors on Thursday to enhance security amid heightened concerns since the San Bernardino, Calif., massacre.
Disney World has not disclosed how long the metal detectors will be in place, the Orlando Sentinel reported. SeaWorld said the move was part of efforts to improve security for the holiday season. Universal Orlando said it would be testing their use as guests approach the theme parks.
Disney World will also discontinue the sale of toy guns and will ban people 14 and older from wearing costumes, even at Halloween parties. A movie theater at Disney Springs where the high-profile Star Wars: The Force Awakens film is set to premiere will have at least one metal detector. California's Disneyland will also implement metal detectors to some degree.
"We continually review our comprehensive approach to security and are implementing additional security measures, as appropriate," Disney said in a statement.
More police deputies, specially trained dogs and security guards have been patrolling the Disney resort recently.
Earlier this year, Universal put up metal detectors in front of some rides to assure people don't bring prohibited items, such as cell phones. The latest use of metal detectors will be a test for the company.
"We want our guests to feel safe when they come here," Universal spokesman Tom Schroder told the Orlando Sentinel. "We've long used metal detection for special events, such as Halloween Horror Nights. This test is a natural progression for us as we study best practices for security in today's world."
SeaWorld said it would be "enhancing security measures for the busy holiday season, including increased security presence both inside and outside the parks."
