Google's Android update includes a feature to prevent phone theft

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 9 (UPI) -- Google announced on Monday it's releasing an update to the Android phone operating system, and it includes a feature to help prevent phone theft.

The new feature is part of Android's Device Protection, and it makes it so a lost or stolen device can only be unlocked by logging into the assigned Google account--regardless of if the phone has had its memory reset.

Apple phones have a similar feature called Activation Lock. Since Activation Lock was added, iPhone thefts have gone down significantly.

Android phones already come with the ability to locate the phone using a Google account, the ability to make the phone ring loudly and the ability to remotely erase what is saved on the phone.

The Android update also includes the ability to use more than one SIM card and the ability to do high definition voice calling.
