DETROIT, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- General Motors had a rough 2014 and things only got worse Thursday when the automaker announced its latest recall, which went into effect at the end of last year.

GM recalled more than 30.4 million vehicles in 2014 and Thursday it announced another 83,000 vehicles in the United States would be added to that list due to an ignition switch problem.

Most of the company's recalls in 2014 were due to ignition switch problems.

The defect could affect engine power, power steering and power braking, GM spokesman Alan Adler said.

"Also, the timing of the key movement into the accessory position relative to crash sensing could result in the air bags not deploying in certain crashes," he added.

GM said fewer than 500 vehicles would be affected by the defect covered in the latest recall, which hasn't resulted in any injuries or deaths. Ignition switch problems addressed in previous recalls have been linked to 42 deaths.

The recall includes 2011 to 2013 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.
