BELLEVUE, Wash., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- T-Mobile is hedging its bets on Wi-Fi.
The wireless carrier is planning to offer unlimited voice calls and text messages over any Wi-Fi network on every new phone it sells. A big bonus: the company will offer the same on Wi-Fi networks outside the U.S. as well.
The plan, called Wi-Fi Un-leashed, is open to all subscribers on T-Mobile's Simple Choice plans.
Also, starting Sept. 17, Wi-Fi U-leased also extends to flights on U.S. airlines. However, subscribers can't make voice calls, but they can text all they want, send pictures and check voicemail thanks to a partnership with in-flight Wi-Fi provider Gogo.
Not only will the feature allow customers to make calls over Wi-Fi, but those calls will continue when the calls switches to the network's LTE and 3G networks.
In February, Sprint announced a similar plan, but only on two Google Android-based phones--the Samsung Galaxy Mega and the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.
